We are working with Software Carpentry to provide programming boot camps prior to each semester (at least). Save the date in your calendar and look back for when registration opens on July 22. Registration and more details are available from our main boot camp page on the Software Carpentry website: http://software-carpentry.org/bootcamps/2013-08-28-wisc.html
Where: 3rd Floor Teaching Lab, Wisconsin Institutes for Discovery, UW-Madison campus
When: August 28-29, 2013. 8:30am to 4:30pm each day
What: Our goal is to help UW-Madison students, faculty, and staff using computing in their research to become more productive by teaching basic computing skills like program design, version control, testing, and task automation. In this two-day boot camp, offered in cooperation with Software Carpentry, short tutorials will alternate with hands-on practical exercises. Participants will be encouraged both to help one another and to apply what they have learned to their own research problems during and between sessions. There will be online follow-up sessions with Software Carpentry for 6 to 8 weeks extending the material from the boot camp. Many attendees have reported significant benefits from attending with members of their research groups or with other individuals they collaborate with.
Full curriculum and installation details for this camp are available here: http://uw-madison-aci.github.io/boot-camps/2013-08-28-uwmadison/index.html
Content: The syllabus for this boot camp will include:
using the shell to do more in less time
using version control to manage and share information
workflow automation with scripting (with Python as example)
how (and how much) to test programs
documentation and debugging
Who: The course is aimed at graduate students, post-docs, staff, and faculty who have basic familiarity with programming concepts (like loops, conditionals, arrays, and functions), but need help translating this knowledge into practical tools to help them work more productively.
Requirements: Participants must bring a laptop with a few specific software packages installed. (The list will be sent to participants a week before the boot camp.)
Contact: Please see our page on the Software Carpentry website for registration and further details (http://software-carpentry.org/bootcamps/2013-08-28-wisc.html).
